Lawn care

RESEARCH STAGE

An operating model is a starting point. Your local customers, costs and competitors determine whether it holds up.

Numeric ranges are provisional planning assumptions, not validated industry benchmarks. Last updated 2026-09-15; version lawn-care-evidence-v1.

What you need to start

Planning investment: $3,575–$35,900. Midpoint: $8,220. These are estimates to replace with quotes.

What drives the economics

Customer ticket assumptions range from $40 to $65. Monthly jobs in the operating model range from 40 to 120, depending on acquisition and operator capacity. No bookings are assumed to be guaranteed.

Questions to answer locally

scope: US national planning baseline; not a representative national sample and not localized to Hempstead. Owner-operated mow/trim/edge/blow on small residential lots; excludes pesticide treatments, tree work, landscape construction and snow service.

startup: Modeled package totals plus three months of fixed working capital; existing vehicle required for low/typical cases. High case adds an unquoted used vehicle allowance. Not an observed minimum or national median.

costs: Itemized supplies, equipment reserve, mileage reserve, card fees, disposal/helper labor where applicable, liability/tools insurance, software, marketing and overhead.

vehicle: IRS H2 2026 mileage proxy includes fuel, auto insurance and vehicle wear/depreciation; do not add these again. Heavy hauling needs local actual-cost validation.

labor: Owner labor is excluded from operating surplus; shown separately at a modeled $25/hour. Junk removal includes a paid helper with provisional loaded cost.

margin: Operating surplus compensates owner work and capital, before income tax/financing. Includes modeled equipment replacement reserves; not audited accounting profit.

capacity: Service time grows with ticket; travel/setup and 24 monthly admin hours included. Bookings are hypotheses, not demand forecasts.

seasonality: BLS supports strong seasonality. Dormancy, rain and heat constrain routes; do not annualize by multiplying peak month by twelve.

recurrence: Weekly/biweekly menus support repeat-service potential during growth season; customer churn and annual active weeks unknown.

acquisition: Dense neighborhood routes are economically important. Marketing spend does not establish CAC or account lifetime.

uncertainty: Licensing, insurance, consumables, capacity, retention, CAC and all ordinal scoring factors still require validation. Both scores remain disabled.

How we search competitors

Search terms: lawn care, lawn mowing, lawn maintenance. We check likely service relevance, remove duplicates and inspect ratings/reviews. Initial service-radius assumption: 15 miles. A location analysis requires observed competitor and demographic data.

Sources and confidence

0 useful operator/economic source records. These include advertised offers and supplier references, not a representative sample of operator profits. CAC and LTV: NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE; neither is required for scoring.

SBA startup cost planning. Separate one-time and monthly costs; include equipment, supplies, permits, insurance, salaries and marketing. Scope: United States. Cost taxonomy only; supplies no category-specific dollar estimates.

Stripe US standard pricing. Standard domestic online card processing is 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful transaction. Scope: United States. Contractual rate example; model assumes one domestic card transaction per job. Other methods, add-on products and disputes differ.

IRS standard mileage rates. Business mileage rate is $0.76/mile for July 1–December 31, 2026; $0.725 applied in the first half. Scope: United States. Optional tax cost proxy, not measured fuel consumption. Model uses all-in vehicle reserve without separately adding auto insurance, fuel or vehicle depreciation. Truck hauling may cost more.

Arco Toro TimeMaster 21199. 30-inch TimeMaster 21199 listed $1,599; listing marked discontinued. Scope: US dealer. Historical catalog price anchor only; cannot assume current availability or commercial-use warranty.

Toro TimeMaster specifications. TimeMaster 21199 is a 30-inch walk-behind mower with a 223cc engine and adjustable cutting height. Scope: US manufacturer. Specifications only; do not turn vendor time-saving claims into jobs/day estimates.

Native Outdoor Care mowing. Basic weekly mow/trim/edge $45 small, $55 medium, $65 large. Scope: Colorado Front Range. Page has inconsistent large-lot acreage labels; use prices and basic scope only, not exact acreage mapping.

GrowPro Lawns mowing. Under 10,000 sq ft: $45 weekly or $50 biweekly; larger yards from $65. Mow/edge/trim/cleanup included. Scope: Hardin Valley/Karns, Tennessee. Exclude $29 introductory first-mow promotion from recurring ticket. Terrain/access premiums not quantified.

Enhance lawn care menu. Weekly mowing $40 up to 4,999 sq ft, $45 for 5,000–9,999; biweekly $45/$50; one-time $55/$65. Scope: Affton, Missouri. Operator menu supports recurring service pricing, not national job productivity.

Insureon lawn care insurance costs. Tools coverage $38/month and commercial auto $190/month in its lawn-care cohort. Scope: US broker lawn-care customers. Local liability/tools allowance still needs quotes; auto covered by all-in mileage model, not added twice.

BLS grounds maintenance workers. May 2025 median employee wage $19.27/hour; physically demanding outdoor work, often seasonal; pesticide licensing may apply. Scope: United States broad grounds occupations. Employee wage is not owner profit; broad scope includes activities outside simple mowing.

EPA applicator certification. Restricted-use pesticide application requires appropriate certification; state programs determine applicable requirements. Scope: United States. MVP economics exclude pesticide treatment, tree work and irrigation. Local rules still need review.

Confidence: low. No local observation has been made on this category page.
